COMMUNITY OUTREACH IN KIZIBA REFUGEE CAMP ON HYGIENE AND SANITATION AWARENESS

Community outreach activities, contribute to sustainable development. These activities can be organized in order to prevent, and promote health services.

It is in this context that on On 21st October 2015 two staff members and four members of One Health Club from Environmental Health Sciences Department visited Kiziba refugee camp with the purpose of conducting a situation analysis before conducting community outreach in Kiziba refugee camp.

Kiziba Refugee camp is located in the Western Province, Karongi District, Rwankuba Sector, Nyarusanga cell. The camp was established in December, 1996. Kiziba refugee camp accommodated 16,979 refugees among them 7,786 male and 9,193 females.

 

After conducting the analysis, Environmental health students and staff decided to conduct the community outreach  with the main objective of promoting hygiene and sanitation in Kiziba camp by raising awareness on various diarrheal diseases prevalent, enhance proper handling of water. After sketching the participants behaves in manner showing us that the understood the concepts of the purpose of hygiene promotion through asking questions, by showings how was the current situations, and showing us that they are going to change some behavior referredtowards water hygiene and sanitation and what they were used to. In general the audience was full of attendees as it was in the week-end; they were almost available except some of the seventh Adventist church.
