Grants and Awards

Erasmus+ programme of the European Union: Action on strategic partnerships in the field of education and training. Deadline: 21 March 2019

Changing our ways: GLF Photo Competition. Photos should show how people across the globe are tackling climate change. Deadline: 22 March 2019

ACU Early Career Conference Grants. Supports early career academics to participate in an international conference in any country other than their country of employment. Deadline: 31 March 2019

UNIDO IPTO Italy International Award for “Innovative Ideas and Technologies in Agribusiness Deadline: 31 March 2019

TWAS grants. Deadline: 22 April 2019

·TWAS Research Grants Programme in Basic Sciences (Individuals). For research projects in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics carried out by individual scientists under 45.

·TWAS Research Grants Programme in Basic Sciences (Groups). For research projects in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics carried out by research units.

 Africa Union call for submissions for ICT in education innovationsDeadline: 30 April 2019

European Commission pilot VET mobility scheme. Will enable student and staff exchanges between vocational education and training (VET) colleges in the EU and colleges in Africa. Deadline: 14 May 2019

2019 Africa Food PrizeDeadline for nominations: 14 May 2019

Fellowships for AFRINIC-30 to be held in Kampala, 15- 21 June 2019. For individuals representing small organisations, universities, and media who are actively involved in Internet operations and development or ICT policies in their countries. Deadline: 15 March 2019

Third call for proposals of the Intra-Africa academic mobility scheme funded by the EU. Will support student and staff mobility in master’s and doctoral programmes in African countries. Deadline: 12 June 2019

TWAS prizes:

·TWAS Medal Lectures. Awarded to TWAS members, in recognition of their achievements in their fields of research. The recipients lecture on a main aspect of their work. Deadline: Open


·Abdus Salam Medal. Awarded to highly distinguished personalities who have served the cause of science in the Developing World. No limit on age, country or field. Deadline: Open

WIOMSA Marine Research Grants Programme - Travel Grant. Supports young scientists to present research results at various fora. Applications for travel grants can be submitted anytime

Scholarships and Courses

DAAD scholarships 2019-2020. For individuals from eligible developing countries to undertake post-graduate   study at German universities in development-related subjects. Deadlines vary by course

·Courses at iCRA. Scholarship application deadline: 21 March 2019:


o   Making Education Work - Transforming education for youth employment in the agri-sector (Wageningen, the Netherlands)

o   Making Innovation Work - Coaching partnerships for inclusive agribusiness (Wageningen, the Netherlands)

o   Making Research work - Solving complex agri-food problems through action research (Wageningen, the Netherlands)  

o   Making Agribusiness Work - Building agribusiness relations for sustainable profit (Benin, Kenya, Nigeria)



·Newton International Fellowships. For non-UK scientists who are at an early stage of their research career and wish to conduct research in the UK. Deadline: 27 March 2019

·CAS-TWAS President’s PhD Fellowship Programme. Up to 200 scholarships for non-Chinese citizens to study in China for doctoral degrees in various fields including agricultural sciences.Deadline: 31 March 2019

·TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Programme. Supports postdoctoral researchers from sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa to go on a 3 month visit to an institute in Germany.Deadline: 1 April 2019

·CODATA-RDA Research Data Science Summer School, 5-16 August 2019 in Trieste, Italy. A limited number of grants available to support participants from developing countries. Deadline: 18 April 2019

·Adelaide Scholarships International. MSc and PhD scholarships for study at the University of Adelaide, Australia.  Deadline: 30 April for November 2019 enrolment

·Call for application for master’s and PhD courses at the Centre of Excellence in Agricultural Development and Sustainable Environment (CEADESE), Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. Limited scholarships are available. Deadline: 3 May 2019

·AGNES Mobility Grants. Support for junior researchers (doctoral students) from sub-Saharan African countries to spend research stays of 1-2 months at a university/research institute in another sub-Saharan African country. Deadline: 10 May 2019

·OWSD PhD Fellowships for women scientists from science and technology lagging countries. Supports women scientists to undertake PhD research in at a host institute in the South. Deadline: 30 May 2019

·Summer School on Global Challenges to Food Security hosted by University of London from 22 July to 9 August 2019. Scholarships available. Deadline: 31 May 2019

·IMU/TWAS Breakout Graduate Fellowships in Mathematics. Supports postgraduate studies, in a developing country, leading to a PhD degree in the mathematical sciences. Deadline: 31 May 2018

·Nestlé Foundation grants for research in human nutrition in low-income and lower middle-income countries. Support includes grants for Masters and PhD projects. Applications accepted all year round
